Cary, NC, September 13, 2022 – Wheelchair athletes enjoyed a pizza social and the opportunity to watch matches led by Reid Kinlaw.
The defending champion from ATC 2020 and the 2022 #1 seed, Denis Kudla, survived a tough matchup tonight beating Zachary Svajda 0-6; 6-2; 6-2. Kudla converted 100% of his break points and had 6 aces. Kudla attended the University of Virginia and turned pro shortly after graduating.
Another exciting matchup tonight was between doubles teams Treat Huey/J.P. Smith and Martins Rocens/Fons Van Sambeek where Huey and Smith won 2-6; 6-4; 1-0 (10). Rocens and Van Sambeek are both players on the NC State men’s tennis team and received a wild card into the tournament. Huey and Smith are the #4 seed in the tournament and will play in the quarterfinals later this week.
After his match, J.P. Smith says he continues to come back to the Cary tournaments because of “the facility, people, crowd, and the homeliness of the event.” This is Smith’s second time competing in the Atlantic Tire Championships, with his first being 3 years ago.
