Brandon Nakashima picked up his first career main draw ATP Challenger win today, defeating fellow Cavalier Thai-Son Kwiatkowski in straight sets. Nakashima, a top ten junior player, was recently a semi-finalist at the US Open Junior Championships. Kwiatkowski, the 2017 NCAA Singles Champion, was the tournaments No. 13 seed. While he was visibly suffering, Kwiatkowski played strong but struggled with the return of serve. Nakashima will face Tommy Paul in the third round. Paul recently won the New Haven Challenger.
Besides Kwiatkowski, a number of other tournament seeds didn’t make it out of the second round. Marco Giron (No 4), Peter Polansky (No 9), Mitchell Krueger (No 7) all faced losses today. The tournament’s top seeded player, Andrea Seppi, ended a day of fifteen matches, facing Liam Broady in the evenings featured singles match. Seppi defeated Broady in straight sets to advance to the third round.
Tomorrow, fans will have the opportunity to see Wake Forest Deacon, Noah Rubin, take on a Georgia Tech’s Christopher Eubanks.
